About Proton VPN & Core Product Breakdown
Proton VPN (developed by the team behind Proton Mail in Switzerland) is one of the world’s leading high-security virtual private network providers. Protected by strict Swiss privacy laws, a strict audited no-logs policy and open-source, independently audited apps, Proton VPN delivers zero-knowledge encryption across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and router platforms.
During Black Friday and Cyber Week, Proton AG routinely offers its deepest discounts of the year, cutting 1-year and 2-year VPN Plus pricing by up to 70%. Below is a breakdown of their core service tiers and security infrastructure:
1. Proton VPN Plus
Proton VPN Plus is the flagship standalone VPN plan designed for users needing high-speed, unrestricted streaming, torrenting and advanced threat protection across up to 10 devices simultaneously.
Key Features:
- Access to 8,000+ high-speed servers across 110+ countries with 10 Gbps server infrastructure
- Secure Core architecture routing traffic through hardened underground servers in Switzerland, Iceland and Sweden
- NetShield ad-blocker filtering out malware, trackers and intrusive online advertisements
- High-speed streaming support for Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video
- Built-in Kill Switch, split tunnelling and custom stealth protocol to bypass strict censorship
Editor’s Note:
Proton VPN Plus is one of the few VPN services that consistently delivers top-tier speed alongside uncompromising privacy. Locking in a 2-year subscription during Black Friday drops the effective monthly cost down to its absolute lowest entry point.
2. Proton Unlimited (VPN + Full Security Suite)
For users seeking a complete privacy ecosystem, Proton Unlimited bundles full Proton VPN Plus capabilities alongside Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Pass and Proton Calendar under a single account.
Key Features:
- Full high-speed Proton VPN Plus service for up to 10 simultaneous connections
- 500 GB encrypted cloud storage pool for secure backups and file archives
- End-to-end encrypted email with custom domain support and 150 email aliases
- Proton Pass Plus password manager with unlimited logins and 2FA authenticator integration
- Complete cross-platform synchronisation across desktop and mobile devices
Editor’s Note:
If you are already planning to secure your email, cloud storage or password management alongside your VPN, upgrading to Proton Unlimited during Cyber Week provides exceptional overall value compared to subscribing to separate tools.
3. Proton Family
Proton Family expands the complete Proton Unlimited feature set across up to 6 individual family members or household users, providing dedicated private spaces under a unified billing management setup.
Key Features:
- Massive 3 TB total encrypted cloud storage pool allocatable across up to 6 accounts
- Full Proton Unlimited access for every family member (Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, Calendar)
- Support for up to 3 custom domains shared across family members
- Complete end-to-end privacy — account managers cannot access other members’ private inboxes or files
- Centralised subscription management with easy member onboarding and storage allocation controls
Editor’s Note:
Proton Family offers exceptional value for households wanting complete privacy protection. Looking at past Black Friday events, locking in a 24-month Family plan offers the lowest per-user monthly cost available.
4. Proton Free VPN Tier
Proton VPN is famous for offering one of the most generous and secure free VPN tiers on the market, featuring unlimited bandwidth with zero data caps or intrusive ads.
Key Features:
- Unlimited free data with no monthly bandwidth limits or artificial throttles
- Strict audited no-logs policy backed by Swiss privacy jurisdiction
- Access to high-speed servers in 5 key countries (including US, Netherlands and Japan)
- Full access to WireGuard, OpenVPN and Stealth security protocols
- Free from third-party ads, data tracking and user profiling
Editor’s Note:
While Proton Free is exceptional for basic privacy and web browsing, it restricts P2P torrenting, netShield ad-blocking and streaming unblocking. Upgrading from the Free plan to Proton VPN Plus during Black Friday is the most cost-effective way to unlock maximum server speeds and full streaming access.
