    BlinkDisk is a free and open-source backup utility for Windows, macOS and Linux devices which promises straightforward backups for everyone, regardless of their technical abilities or background.

    As a relatively new backup software solution gaining traction as of early 2026, BlinkDisk is clearly focusing on the core areas of providing security-focused (encrypted) backups alongside highly flexible cloud storage integration options. This sees the core software, powered by the Kopia backup engine behind the scenes, offering secure AES 256-bit encryption alongside support for popular S3 compatible cloud storage services plus the ability to purchase cloud storage directly from BlinkDisk themselves.

    Whilst BlinkDisk remains a relatively new offering, it appears to already cover the most important aspects of making a solid file-level backup to a good standard. This includes being able to securely encrypt data before it leaves a device, create locally stored copies of a backup whilst also storing copies on popular third-party cloud storage services such as iDrive e2 or Backblaze B2.

    BlinkDisk is a promising free and open-source backup utility which looks set to provide a genuine alternative to many of the bigger backup software brands. It will be great to see how this new tool handles various real-world backup scenarios and how easily it lends itself to getting data on a device securely backed up – Vamos.

    BlinkDisk Usability

    In this section I will be downloading, installing and using the BlinkDisk backup software and sharing my experience throughout the process. This begins by downloading and installing the software on my Windows device before moving on to assess the core backup and cloud storage functionality.

    This process starts via the official BlinkDisk website where this completely free and open-source backup software can be downloaded.

    Installing BlinkDisk

    When installing BlinkDisk, it is important to note that the installation is cross-platform by design. This means, when installing the desktop software, we should see a very similar setup experience across all supported Windows, macOS and Linux devices.

    Having downloaded the installer and set it running on my own Windows device, installation from this point onwards is highly automated and it took just a few seconds in my own experience before the app was ready for use. One of the first tasks when first opening BlinkDisk is optionally logging in with a BlinkDisk account or, instead, opting to use the software without an account (something which will exclude users from the cloud storage service integrated by BlinkDisk themselves).

    Having opted to create an account (a process for which the software will redirect users back to the BlinkDisk website to complete) I can now login to the BlinkDisk desktop application after which I am prompted to create a new Vault as a part of the initial setup.

    I will look at the full backup setup process, including configuration of this initial vault for storing data in later sections, however, in terms of setting up the desktop application itself, all work is now complete – a good start so far.

    Backing up within BlinkDisk

    BlinkDisk is a file-level backup tool which means it is focused on backing up the individual files and folders on a device as opposed to the disk image-based approach which will include all data (including any installed applications plus the device’s operating system) by default. One of the first and most important tasks to complete before building a new backup set within BlinkDisk is the creation of a backup vault. Backup vaults are areas upon an attached storage device (or a cloud storage service) which can be defined and then used to store the resultant data when making backups.

    We can create a vault during the initial application setup process or by using the “create vault” option found on the application’s left-side menu (within the drop-down menu listing all available vaults). A vault can be specified as a local vault making use of locally attached storage (such as an external hard disk) or a cloud-based vault supporting the use of various cloud storage providers including BlinkDisk’s own cloud storage service, CloudBlink.

    Importantly, this vault creation process includes optionally specifying the encryption which is to be applied to any data stored within the vault itself. This means all backup sets using this vault for storage will be subject to this same encryption configuration (and password) versus the backup sets themselves having their own individual encryption keys (as is usually the case with many other backup providers). With a vault configured and ready for use, the next step in backing up data is to select the first folder which is to be included and backed up to this new vault.

    In a slightly less than conventional way, BlinkDisk have taken the approach that this selected folder will not only specify a container of items to be backed up, but will also become the actual “backup set” in and of itself as well. This means, as soon as the folder is specified and named (and an emoji set, for those who like emojis), the next step in the set-up process immediately guides us through the process of configuring all other backup set related settings (for this selected folder).

    As can be seen above, having specified a folder for backup, we can then specify a number of related settings including a good degree of historic file versioning choices, automatic scheduling, excluded files and file types plus optionally turn on data compression amongst various other related options.

    Importantly, for any good backup software, BlinkDisk provides a high degree of functionality and control across both of the historic file versioning and automatic scheduling functionality. This is important as backups taken regularly with good historic version retention settings can prove very helpful in ensuring enhanced data protection including against highly destructive threats involving malware and ransomware attacks.

    With all configuration options set, the folder to be backed-up will now become visible on the dashboard page where it can be managed alongside other backup folders. From this dashboard we can optionally reconfigure this backup set, recover data from it and, in lieu of an automatic schedule, also set it running manually as and when required (using the context options menu as can be seen in-use below).

    NB – BlinkDisk conveniently provides a “Backup All” on this dashboard page which is very useful for manually setting multiple backup sets running at the same time with just a single click.

    When any given folder is in the process of being backed up, we can easily see its progress on this same dashboard page alongside the date and time since the last successful backup was completed. Clicking on the backup folder in the left sidebar reveals a page where we can see a detailed history for any given folder including the number of files included, its size and the date and time it was last run (a very useful addition which provides a great way to check in on the progress and status of a backup folder over time).

    Whilst I personally prefer the more conventional approach of a backup set being comprised of multiple files and folders and having its own scheduling and encryption configuration individual to that particular set, this folder-based approach does at least function well enough to be useful. It should be noted that a major drawback of this approach, should you have multiple folders across various physical disks or locations at the same level in your file system hierarchy which cannot be combined within a single folder, multiple backup folders will need to be configured within BlinkDisk.

    NB – It should be noted that BlinkDisk will allow the specification of a mounted drive (with a drive letter) as a “folder” meaning everything on this drive can more easily be included within a single backup set (although multiple drives would still require multiple folders).

    With the vaults themselves being the place where encryption is set when using BlinkDisk (not the backup folders / sets individually), one of the most obvious risks of sharing such encryption becomes apparent. If the encryption for this vault is ever compromised, then all backup sets sharing the same vault will also be compromised as a result. Of course, the use of multiple vaults (each with their own encryption password) could be used to counter such a threat, but this would bring with it the need to create additional backup sets (folders) with it meaning it would still be preferable to apply encryption to a backup set rather than a storage container (in my own opinion at least).

    Cloud Backups within BlinkDisk

    Having seen a full backup folder (backup set) created and set running, I will in this section be making use of the integrated cloud backup functionality found within BlinkDisk. This begins with a look at BlinkDisk’s own cloud storage service (CloudBlink) which is available amongst various other supported cloud providers when first creating a new vault as can be seen below.

    NB – BlinkDisk currently provide registered users with 100GB of free cloud storage for the first 30-days which serves as a great way of fully testing out the service.

    Users will, of course, need to be registered and logged into the BlinkDisk application in order to make use of the BlinkCloud service (remember, if preferred, you can use the BlinkDisk desktop application without registering) and this service is chargeable after the initial 30-day trial period has ended. Assuming BlinkDisk’ s own cloud storage option is configured and selected during vault creation, we can continue to configure the encryption password in the same way as was done when using a local storage vault earlier on.

    Once a new cloud-based vault has been created, selecting this vault using the vault selection drop-down menu on the left sidebar allows this new storage option to be utilised. At this point we can then create one or more new folders (backup sets) which will be used to store data from this device onto the cloud.

    When backing up to the cloud within BlinkDisk, we see the same set of backup configuration options as was available when storing data locally. This includes the ability to set custom historic file version retention periods as well as specify file exclusions and data compression levels (two considerations which might need to be adjusted to make optional use of any given cloud storage allocation).

    NB – Encryption is set on the cloud vault (the storage) itself within BlinkDisk as opposed to being set for each folder (backup set). This means, when creating multiple backup sets within a single vault, all of these sets will effectively share the same encryption password.

    With the new folder configured, it will show up whenever the relevant vault is selected for use via the application’s left dropdown menu as well as being accessible via the main dashboard view. Backups can be run manually from this point onwards or the automatic schedule allowed to take over if set to do so.

    Moving on and, with BlinkDisk’ s own cloud storage set aside, another key feature of this backup tool is its ability to integrate third-party cloud storage from multiple vendors including AWS S3, Backblaze B2, iDrive e2 plus many mainstream other S3 compatible providers.

    NB – BlinkDisk’ s flexible approach to cloud storage sees them also supporting integrations from dedicated NAS devices, SFTP servers, Rclone and WebDAV alongside the S3 compatible providers seen above.

    For testing these third-party integrations, I will be creating a new cloud vault using iDrive’s S3 compatible e2 object storage service (this is done by selecting the “S3 compatible storage” option seen above). Once configured (with the necessary S3 details available from the provider), the new storage vault will again appear in the list of available vaults found on the left side menu (see below)

    Although not too big an issue, I think it is a little confusing to show me a sign reading “Excellent, All your files were backed up without any errors or warnings” whenever a new vault is created (this is obviously not the case as I haven’t added anything to be backed up within this vault yet). Nevertheless, adding one or more folders (backup sets) for saving to this new storage vault can be performed in the same way as was seen when creating a locally stored backup earlier on.

    I will look at the recovery of data in the next section, however, whilst feeling a little unconventional thanks to its use of individual folders instead of backup sets (containing multiple folders), getting data backed up both locally or to one of many third-party cloud storage providers does appear to work well within BlinkDisk.

    Restoring Data within BlinkDisk

    Having seen BlinkDisk used to make both locally sorted and cloud-based backups so far, I will in this section be looking at the process of recovering this backed up data. This is a process which remains the same regardless of which vault is being used and begins by navigating to the correct vault (using the vaults menu) and selecting “Browse backups” under the context menu as can be seen below.

    Importantly, BlinkDisk fully supports the (very important) concept keeping of multiple historic versions of a backup set meaning we can, if required, recover files from the latest backup or a specified earlier date and time. As can be seen below, after clicking to browse the set for a particular folder, the application will then list the available versions of the backup which can be recovered

    Selecting the files to be recovered from this version of the backup and then clicking on the button to restore will bring up the restore options box. Here we can specify the recovery location (file path) and whether to restore individual files or have everything recovered within a single ZIP archive.

    NB – I think it would be useful to also have an option for recovering any selected files to their original location, something seen in many other popular backup products.

    With all restore options selected, the process of recovering data within BlinkDisk can begin. The application will itself provide real-time progress updates on this task as it completes and this part of the software appeared to work exactly as expected during my own restoration testing on a Windows device.

    And with this the core backup and restore functionality of BlinkDisk have been covered and tested. Overall, despite the choice of taking a folder-first approach and setting encryption for the storage vault as opposed to the backup set itself feeling a little unoptimized in my own personal view, BlinkDisk remains a solid free backup application which does get the job done as expected.

    BlinkDisk Security

    With the core backup functionality of BlinkDisk now covered, I will in this section be looking at some of the security related features provided by the software. As a highly focused file-level backup tool which makes use of pre-defined vaults for storing any backed up data, this security really comes down to one main area – the application of secure zero-knowledge encryption.

    Applying strong end-to-end encryption to any backed-up data remains one of the most secure and effective means of ensuring such data remains secure and private when stored. Even in the (hopefully unlikely) case that this data might fall into the wrong hands for whatever reason later on, securely encrypted data will still remain unreadable by anyone except the original owner holding the encryption key (password).

    NB – When utilising secure encryption for backed up data, be sure not to forget the encryption password as doing so will almost certainly result in the total data loss.

    BlinkDisk makes use of the highly secure AES-256-GCM encryption standard meaning the software doesn’t just encrypt backed up data, but also simultaneously ensures nobody has tampered with or modified this data in transit or at rest. This approach to data security ensures all data is securely encrypted before it leaves the device being backed up and remains encrypted the entire time it is stored away from the device.

    Software Support from BlinkDisk

    As an open-source project, support for BlinkDisk appears to currently be focused around the codebase on GitHub as opposed to the provision of an end user portal providing user guides and the like. A support email address is referenced on the website but, with the software being free for all to begin with and open-sourced, it is unclear how much support the key developers might be willing to provide via email in the case of users encountering issues.

    With this limited consumer-level approach to providing support in mind, BlinkDisk might not (yet) be ideal for less technical users. Hopefully this is something BlinkDisk will continue to work on as it matures as a backup solution.

CloudBlink also has the distinct advantage of being pre-integrated into the BlinkDisk software it is ready-to-go with no need to mess about with S3 access keys, regions and the like.

    BlinkDisk uses enterprise-grade AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption, powered directly by the robust Kopia engine working behind the scenes. This makes use of a zero-knowledge architecture meaning all data is encrypted locally on a device before it is uploaded to the storage vault in-use.

    In this section of my review, I will be looking at some alternatives to BlinkDisk. This will be focused on free backup software tools which provide a strong set of relatable backup features.

    Remember, any ratings, reviews and opinions given below reflect my own opinions and these should be treated only as a guide. When purchasing any form of data backup software, always be sure to check the details of the offering out for yourself and try and to make use of any free trials, whenever possible, to help ensure the solution is correct before committing to a purchase.

    1) ASCOMP BackUp Maker

    BackUp Maker is an excellent free backup utility from expert software developers, ASCOMP. Despite being completely free to use for individuals (or available at a competitive price for businesses), BackUp Maker still provides many great backup-related features making it a great alternative to BlinkDisk.

    One notable aspect of BackUp Maker is the wide array of backup-related functionality on offer from a free-to-use tool alongside the well-designed and easy to use wizard-based interface. Key functionality includes support for handling multiple backup sets, integration of multiple storage targets (including several top-tier cloud drive services), strong AES 256-bit encryption and compression plus the concept of backup profiles for easily backing up pre-determined areas of a PC.

    Backup FREE is the latest edition of Ashampoo’s excellent and long-standing free backup software line. Despite being the free edition of their superstar title, Backup Pro, Ashampoo have included a good amount of backup functionality making this a great choice for a anyone seeking a highly functional and reliable alternative to BlinkDisk.

    Fully updated and optimised for the latest Windows 11 operating system, Backup FREE is a well-designed and easy-to-use backup application from a highly reputable backup software developer supporting both file-level and disk image backups. Using an efficient incremental backup methodology by default, additional features include user-definable historic file versioning, automatic scheduling plus built-in tools for building bootable recovery media.

    Available in both free and premium editions, ToDo Backup Free is a highly functional backup tool with a great set of built-in features and is an ideal alternative to BlinkDisk. ToDo Backup supports making file, disk and partition image-based backups, file-level backups, multiple backup sets, third-party cloud integration, secure zero-knowledge encryption, automatic scheduling, WinPE recovery media plus the use of full, incremental and differential methodologies.

    The premium edition of ToDo Backup (EaseUS ToDo Backup Home) offers even more functionality over and above the free edition, thus making for a fully functional Windows backup application. Additional functionality includes use of the EaseUS SMART backup functionality (for automatically optimising backup settings), the EaseUS Secure Zone for enhanced malware protection, advanced disk cloning functionality plus the latest AI backup tools from EaseUS.

    Other useful functionality found within ToDo Backup Home includes dedicated disk and partition cloning support, specialist Microsoft Outlook backup tools, universal restore technology, enhanced data compression plus dedicated system (PC) transfer tools amongst various other premium features.

    ToDo Backup is available in a limited free edition alongside a fully-functional premium edition (ToDo Backup Home) priced from $39.95 per year (or $59.95 with 1TB of cloud storage included). A perpetual licence is also available from $59.95 or from $79.95 with free lifetime upgrades included.     BlinkDisk Review Summary

    Overall, BlinkDisk appears to be a well-built backup application which is capable of getting data backed up as would be expected of it. Third-party cloud storage integration options are very good (especially for a free-to-use tool) as are the options for setting automatic scheduling, defining file exclusions and data compression which all combine to make this a very flexible choice.

    Personally speaking, I am not a big fan of the approach BlinkDisk have taken towards making backup sets based upon specifying existing folders to act as “containers” for a backup (i.e. a backup set). Not only do I find this something of an inflexible approach (e.g. adding two folders across two separate attached external drives would require two backup folders) but this approach also means the same backup configuration settings may also need to be manually entered multiple times under such circumstances.

    Overall, BlinkDisk works well, if not a little unconventionally, and is already making itself stand-out thanks to some strong built-in support for third-party cloud storage providers. This is a great start from a tool which I expect we will see continue to develop into a genuine alternative to the bigger backup software players – keep this great start going BlinkDisk!
