    Installing WinOptimizer 28

Installing WinOptimizer 28 begins at the official Ashampoo website where a fully featured 30-day free trial of the software can be downloaded.

winoptimizer 28 installer running / asking for key

One of the first things asked by the installer application is to provide a licence key (for those who have already purchased the software) or to provide Ashampoo account details to register for the full 30-day free trial. If you don’t yet have a free Ashampoo account then one can be registered for the purposes of enabling the full trial version (else this is limited to just 7-days).

Once you’ve registered (or entered your licence key), the remaining installation process is straightforward with just a few additional clicks required before WinOptimizer 28 becomes ready for use.

initial view of winoptimizer 28 desktop app after installation

As can be seen in the screenshot above, once installation is complete, we are immediately greeted by the main WinOptimizer 28 dashboard page. In addition to providing a valuable overview of the current cleaning status of the PC in-use, this page also acts as a hub for easily accessing the many cleaning modules and utility tools available within the software.

NB – Remember, Ashampoo offer a full 30-day free trial of WinOptimizer 28 should you wish to try these features out for yourself.

    PC Cleaning Tools

One of the key strengths of WinOptimizer 28 is the full and specialised set of PC cleaning tools included within the suite. These tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and effective as Ashampoo continue to refine the underlying cleaning algorithms which power them. This results in faster and more efficient cleaning that delves deeper into the latest versions of Windows than ever before.

winoptimizer 28 view of main clean page

The best starting point for cleaning a PC with WinOptimizer is via the “Clean” section which can be found upon the main application menu (see screenshot above).

Upon opening this module, WinOptimizer automatically performs a full scan of the system and generates a report of what it deems necessary to be cleaned. This report highlights the main areas of the PC (including internet cleaning, drive cleaning, privacy cleaning and registry cleaning) and indicates how much cleaning each section might require along with an estimate of how much disk space could be recovered.

winoptimizer 28 clean page with details view

As the screenshot shows, clicking the “details” box for any cleaning section provides more information on the specific entries that will be affected by the cleaning process. We can fine-tune the cleaning process by unchecking any items to be excluded or even by expanding items which provides even more control over what is being selected (for each individual item).

Before moving on to explore the WinOptimizer 28 homepage analyser in more detail, it is worth noting that we can access even more settings for these particular cleaning modules via the main WinOptimizer settings menu which is shown below.

winoptimizer 28 internet cleaner - firefox details

In addition to the configuration of many other aspects of WinOptimizer, this settings menu allows for fine-tuning the cleaning options for each of the four main cleaning tools found in the “Clean” module’s page. We can specify within here which areas of the registry to clean, which parts of any connected drives to include or exclude and which parts of installed browsers to clean as is demonstrated in the screenshot above.

NB: WinOptimizer’s browser profiling capabilities allow the application of different cleaning and optimisation settings to different browsers during the same cleaning cycle. For example, we could delete all cookies from one browser while preserving them in another, a handy feature for power users, web developers and any other users with specific browser cleaning needs.

    WinOptimizer 28 Application Homepage

Having explored some of the core cleaning modules available within WinOptimizer 28, we can turn our attention back to the main dashboard view and the powerful set of system analysis tools available upon it. These tools provide valuable insight into a PC’s current performance and cleanliness status as well as offering one-click (or fully automatic) cleaning once this analysis is complete.

winoptimizer 28 app homepage after system analysis run

As can be seen above, the fully revamped homepage design in version 28 displays eight key cleaning and performance metrics, each of which represented by a tile showing its current state and whether further cleaning or optimisation is required. Clicking on any tile reveals which parts of the system it covers and what will be cleaned upon pressing the “Optimize” button. The homepage also includes an upgraded CPU “speedometer” and RAM usage gauge providing an overview of the PC’s current workload alongside some additional system details visible towards the bottom of the window.

winoptimizer 28 homepage showing drive cleaner module details

For more in-depth system analysis, WinOptimizer 28 provides an “Extended” page which is accessible via the main application menu (found under the “System Analysis” heading as can be seen below).

winoptimizer homepage extended cleaning tools page

This “Extended” page provides additional analysis and cleaning tools which help to complement the core tools found on the homepage. As such, this extended set of tools tends to be more specialised, offering targeted cleaning for specific areas of a device as required.

winoptimizer 28 homepage extended cleaning tools details view

All of these extended tools must be manually selected for inclusion in the optimisation and cleaning process. Clicking the spyglass icon next to each tool reveals what the current analysis has found and which items will be removed (cleaned) if said tool is included in the next cleaning cycle.

NB – As was mentioned earlier on, the tools on both the homepage and the Extended cleaning page can be further customised through the main WinOptimizer application settings menu.

    One Click Optimizer

The “One Click Optimizer” is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and effective cleaning modules available within the WinOptimizer suite. Further improved with fully up-to-date and more powerful cleaning algorithms working up to 50% faster than in previous versions, this tool makes effective PC cleaning incredibly easy requiring just a single click to set running.

winoptimizer 28 initial one-click optimizer view

As can be seen in the screenshot above, the One Click Optimizer module initially looks quite similar to the main “Clean” module as was seen earlier on (it has a similar interface at first glance). The key difference here is that the One Click Optimizer tool can be pre-configured to perform different cleaning operations and then set to run automatically after any system analysis process is complete. This means, as the name suggests, it can be used to analyse and clean a system with just a single click.

    winoptimizer 28 one-click optimizer settings

After enabling the “Scan and delete automatically” option (as is shown above), the One Click Optimizer will automatically scan and delete any detected items as soon as the module is set running.

winoptimizer 28 one-click optimizer cleaning complete view

Once run, this is really all there is to the One Click Optimizer. This is a module which utilises the most powerful and newly upgraded tools and cleaning algorithms found within WinOptimizer 28, making PC maintenance effortless whether run manually through the desktop application or set-up as an automated task.

    Automatic Performance Optimisation

In addition to a comprehensive set of system cleaning tools, WinOptimizer 28 also features several live (i.e. running in real-time) PC optimisation tools designed to keep any PC continuously running at its best.

winoptimizer 28 initial view of automatic cleaning page

As is shown above, the “Automatic” page is where we find these three main live optimisation tools, these being “Live-Tuner”, “Auto-Clean” and “Game-Booster”. All three of these modules are designed to run automatically in the background, keeping a PC optimised and clean automatically and in real-time once enabled.

    • Auto-Clean: This module focuses on keeping any hard drives clean and optimised by automatically removing both web browsing traces after closing web browsers as well as deleting any unnecessary application files and temporary system files as required.
    • Live-Tuner: This tool aims to improve application performance and keep a PC running both quickly and responsively. It works in the background, adjusting and terminating processes as required and helps to enhance application launch performance by adjusting the priority of existing processes or by terminating new processes to save system resources.
    • Game-Booster: The most powerful module of the three, the “Game-Booster” is an aggressive optimisation solution designed to significantly boost video game performance. It achieves maximum levels of performance by closing, adjusting or otherwise limiting any existing Windows background processes and services deemed unnecessary whilst gaming. Whilst very powerful, it is also a very intelligent module and will attempt to reinstate any terminated services again once the game in question has been closed.

winoptimizer 28 automatic cleaning game booster profile

NB – Remember, Ashampoo offer a full 30-day free trial of WinOptimizer 28 should you wish to try these specialist live optimisation tools out for yourself.

    Additional Optimisation Tools

Beyond the three automatic performance boosters covered just above, WinOptimizer 28 includes many additional and more specialised PC performance enhancing modules. These specialist tools each address specific performance related tasks including managing Windows services, background processes, internet connections and SSD drive optimisation (among various others). You can find these tools listed on the “All Modules” page as can be seen below.

winoptimizer 28 all modules view with optimise boot tool highlighted

With the automatic optimisation tools set aside, WinOptimizer also allows for these additional tools to be run manually, as required, alongside the other core optimisation modules found within the application. Out of the many additional tools available, some notable additions include:

    SSD Wizard:

Whilst newer SSD (Solid State Drive) disks are undeniably very fast (much faster than their mechanical counterparts), they often still require some degree of maintenance, configuration and specialised optimisation in order to achieve optimal performance.

winoptimizer 28 ssd wizard module in use

This is where the SSD Wizard module comes in useful, a tool which brings together the various settings required to optimise an SSD drive and get it running at its best. Once open and the initial analysis complete, we can study any selected features and enable them as required (with helpful guidance on each option available from within the tool itself). Note that the “recommended settings” button (highlighted in the screenshot) which can help in fine-tuning these settings automatically for any given system.

    Boot Center:

The “Boot Center” module is a specialist tool which can be used to analyse and optimise the Windows boot-up process (Windows start-up optimisation). This optimisation works by analysing which processes are set to start automatically alongside the Windows operating system itself and then allowing for these processes to be turned on or off as required to increase performance.

winoptimizer 28 boot center module in use

As can be seen above, this tool provides a detailed analysis and breakdown of the Windows boot-up process and helps to shed light on any issues which could be causing delays. We also see (pointed out above) that the tool keeps historic records of previous boot times meaning any anomalies can easily be spotted and a baseline boot-up time established.

winoptimizer 28 boot center autorun tab view

Alongside monitoring the performance of the boot process, the “Boot Center” tool also provides an in-depth look at the tasks and processes which are active during start-up and, for many of these, provides an assessment as to the impact it might have upon start-up time.

NB – Notice in the above image that WinOptimizer will in many cases also show the number of milliseconds it is estimated each entry is delaying the boot time. This is alongside an overall assessment of how much impact each entry is having (e.g., High, Medium or Low).

    Firewall Manager:

Newly added in WinOptimizer 28, the “Firewall Manager” module aims to make easy and reliable the task of managing and modifying the built-in Windows firewall.

winoptimizr 28 firewall manager in use with advanced mode activated

Supporting use across three modes (Basic, Normal and Extended), this firewall management module helps make the Windows firewall more accessible for users of all technical abilities. The basic mode allows anyone to easily block or allow a specific application by simply selecting the applications executable file (the .exe file), a direction (in, our or both) and then selecting to allow or block at the firewall level.

winoptimizr 28 firewall manager creating new rule

Whilst the basic operating mode focuses on applications (which can be very useful for ensuring certain applications can’t have internet access on a particular device), the more advanced modes show various Windows services and background processes as well. We can also, when making use of the Extended running mode, make use of the advanced rule filter (see below) which can easily help to highlight any firewall configuration issues including inactive rules and rules left behind for missing executable software or Windows services.

winoptimizr 28 firewall manager extended filter view

Altogether, this makes the new Firewall manager a nice addition for any Windows user seeking an easier method for managing the device’s firewall rules and enhanced control over the install apps and services which connect to the internet.

    System Information 2:

The newly added (upgraded) System Information 2 module is a great way to easily see an overall of all hardware specifications and components which make up a Windows PC. This includes, at a glance, useful information including the system’s motherboard, processor and RAM, network adapters and storage devices (hard drives) plus USB devices and peripherals including monitors and printers.

winoptimizer 28 system information 2 module in use

Whilst this information gathering is not unique to WinOptimizer 28, this newly upgraded tool does conveniently gather a wealth of useful system information and displays everything within a single easy-to-use interface making it ideal for all Windows PC users who want to know a little more about their device.

    HDD Inspector:

The “HDD Inspector” module provides a user-friendly interface for monitoring the health and status of any available hard disks. This includes viewing the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) self-diagnostic information for each drive, information which can help identify potential problems before they become too serious.

winoptimizer 28 hdd inspector module view

In addition to providing valuable details about device health and SMART status, HDD Inspector also presents a wealth of additional disk information including:

    • SATA supported standards (e.g., SATA III).
    • Capacity and cache values.
    • Condition and temperature information (when available).
    • Make, model, and serial numbers of installed hard drives (when available).

The HDD Inspector also supports generating and exporting detailed reports containing a lot of useful details and statistics for each drive attached to a system. This can be useful for both reference and IT / tech support related issues for advanced users.

    Benchmark Center:

The “Benchmark Center” module enables WinOptimizer 28 users to perform a detailed benchmark of their current system with ease. This is particularly useful when evaluating and comparing the performance of any new components or configurations on a Windows system.

winoptimizer 28 benchmark center module view

As the screenshot shows, the System Benchmark module provides detailed benchmarking tools for both:

    • The system itself: This focuses on measuring CPU and wider system performance.
    • Installed hard disks: This assesses the read/write speeds and overall performance of any attached storage devices.

In order to gather a series of useful stats, the “Benchmark Center” tool will need to be run with the system otherwise unused and all other applications closed down (to minimise interference when assessing system performance). As can be seen in the screenshot above, once complete this system analysis shows various useful metrics including both Drystone and Wheatstone ratings for the CPU, RAMPerf measurements for memory performance and an overall WinOptimizer system score which can be useful for quickly comparing different PCs.

    Context Menu Manager:

The “Context Menu Manager” is another useful addition to WinOptimizer 28. This is a module which helps remove any unwanted or excessive entries from the Windows context menu (this is the menu which appears when right-clicking on an element within Windows such as a file or folder). Keeping these menus tidy and uncluttered not only makes them easier to navigate, but can also reduce the slowdown sometimes experienced when opening bloated context menus.

winoptimizer 28 context menu manager view

As can be seen above, the “Context Menu Manager” module (accessible via the “All Modules” page) lists all currently enabled context menu extensions. Removing any unwanted or underutilised extensions from this list is then as simple as unchecking the item, it will then no longer be included within the relevant context menus going forwards.

NB – Should you require any disabled item to be re-enabled in the context menu, this is as simple as navigating back to the item in the above list and rechecking it.

    Crash Analyzer:

Another new addition to WinOptimizer 28, the Crash Analyzer module aims to make straightforward the otherwise cumbersome and difficult task of analysing and decoding Windows system and application errors logs.

winoptimizer 28 crash analyzer module view

Expanding each entry provides access to individual crash logs and from these logs more information can be gathered as to why any given issue occurred. Although, in my own opinion at least, this still remains an advanced tool, the interface provided by WinOptimizer makes viewing log file information really easy (compared to the basic tools built-into Windows itself) meaning this module can useful for anyone looking to diagnose any system errors further.

NB – In cases when diagnosing a crashing or otherwise unstable application, having access to such log information and being able to “Google it” can often be of great help in diagnosing any underlying issues.

    Scheduling & Automation

So far, I have covered WinOptimizer’s powerful cleaning and optimisation modules and shown how they can help to maintain the performance of a Windows PC. A key feature which makes this software so powerful is its built-in scheduling and automation functionality, functionality which has been further improved in this latest edition of the software.

    winoptimizer 28 scheduling module view

The Task Scheduler module (shown above) is where we can configure all of the automated cleaning and optimisation jobs available within WinOptimizer 28. We can choose to use the “One Click Optimizer” module for handling this workload or choose from the full set of system maintenance tools found on the homepage. Each choice comes with a pre-configured set of cleaning settings which will be used during the automated cleaning routine (unless changed otherwise).

NB – Scheduled cleaning and optimisation tasks won’t run if the WinOptimizer application is open and in- use at the scheduled run time.

Overall, the scheduling module is remarkably easy to configure and use. It is also great to see the tool integrate with pre-configured cleaning modules like the “One Click Optimizer” or the “Home Page” maintenance tools making it simple to set a schedule and let WinOptimizer work quietly in the background as required.

    Enhancing Privacy

Ashampoo has clearly placed a strong emphasis on improving user privacy via the use of WinOptimizer 28. Not only does this software offer various specialised privacy-enhancing tools (as we’ll see in action soon), but the thorough cleaning provided by many of the core modules also helps keep personal and PC usage data private.

NB – While cleaning a PC of unwanted files helps to maintain privacy, Ashampoo has included specific privacy-enhancing tools in WinOptimizer 28 that further strengthen this default privacy protection.

Let’s explore some of the key tools within WinOptimizer 28 that help protect user privacy:

    Privacy Manager Tool:

The “Privacy Manager” module (see below) is a powerful module which helps to address several key areas and settings found within Windows that could negatively impact user privacy.

winoptimizer 28 privacy manager on telemetry tab

With the Privacy Manager module open, we can view and optimise various settings related to the Windows operating system. Such settings include Windows telemetry data, location data, Windows Update service operation, Cortana voice assistance settings, individual app permissions plus much more.

    Browser Extension Manager:

The “Browser Extension Manager” provides a quick and easy way to view and manage any plugins or add-ons installed across any mainstream web browsers (including many popular browsers such as Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome).

    winoptimizer 28 browser extension manager

Monitoring any installed and active browser plugins is in many cases an effective way to help maintain and improve overall web browsing privacy. The “Browser Extension Manager” module not only makes it easy to find and uninstall any potentially unwanted browser plugins, but also displays community ratings for popular plugins thus helping WinOptimizer users quickly identify those which might require removal.

    File Wiper:

The “File Wiper” tool, as its name suggests, offers a quick and reliable method for permanently and securely deleting personal or private files from a Windows PC. This method of secure deletion ensures such files can’t be easily be recovered or reinstated afterwards (it is virtually impossible to recover such files after using this secure data wiping tool).

    winoptimizer 28 file wiper module

We can add individual files to the “File Wiper” module by simply dragging and dropping them onto the app interface. The tool also includes pre-configured functions for wiping various areas of a Windows system including the Windows Recycle Bin and any free disk space amongst other areas.

NB – Simply deleting a file within Windows (even from the Recycle Bin) might not completely remove all traces of it from the disk. Specialised tools like the File Wiper module provide a safer and more effective method for ensuring sensitive files are securely deleted, making recovery virtually impossible.

    WinOptimizer 28 Security

Whilst PC cleaning and optimisation are both core features within WinOptimizer 28, the application also features various tools important in helping to bolster the security and privacy of a Windows PC.

This enhancement of both privacy and security starts with some of the advanced deep cleaning tools available within the suite. This includes tools such as the enhanced browser cleaning module or the secure file deletion module (File Wiper) amongst several others. These features combine to ensure that Windows users can safely remove any personal or sensitive data from their device.

winoptimizer 28 file encryption module in use

Additional security functionality is provided by other specialised tools, including ADS (Alternate Data Streams) management, secure file shredding plus the ability to apply strong zero-knowledge file encryption via WinOptimizer 28 as and when required.

One of the most valuable security tools available within WinOptimizer 28 is that of the “File Manipulator” module (as can be seen above). This tool provides powerful file encryption capabilities allowing users to protect any file with a user-specified password thus ensuring its contents remain safe. PC users can also decrypt previously encrypted files and use other file manipulation features to split and merge files for more flexible storage options using this same tool.

    Software Support from Ashampoo

Ashampoo provide a useful help and support portal via their official website which features extensive product documentation for WinOptimizer 28.

winoptimizer 28 support - web user support manual

Alongside this core product documentation is also a comprehensive FAQ section which should be capable of handling most problems encountered whilst using WinOptimizer. Should you still need to get in touch with a support representative from Ashampoo at any point, customers can also submit support tickets directly to Ashampoo via this same online portal.

    WinOptimizer 28 Review Summary

Whilst it would be fair to say that there is nothing revolutionary about this latest edition of WinOptimizer in terms of new features, it should be stressed that there doesn’t need to be with this powerful software offering everything required to keep Windows running smoothly. With this in mind, WinOptimizer 28 remains a great example of a solid PC cleaning suite receiving regular updates and continuous improvements from a clearly very committed and hard-working development team.

As always, the powerful and highly sophisticated automated cleaning and system optimisation functionality is what really makes WinOptimizer the “go to” system cleaning tool. This cleaning and optimisation functionality is fully upgraded in version 28 with fully updated cleaning algorithms offering up to 50% faster cleaning, an improved 1-Click optimiser for quick and effective cleaning plus even deeper cleaning coverage across the entire Windows operating system.

All-in-all, WinOptimizer 28 is an excellent PC cleaning and optimisation suite which continues to improve with each new edition launched. Not only does this tool perform very well in its own right, but it is (in my opinion at least) very fairly priced and remains one of the few tools capable of bringing genuinely noticeable performance enhancements to virtually any PC – Great work Ashampoo.
